Fernandez Leventhal Gallery is devoted to African sculpture and to the aesthetic qualities that make it compelling: form, proportion, rhythm, surface, and presence. Guided by connoisseurship and a deep appreciation for individual artistic vision, we look beyond classification to consider what makes a sculpture exceptional. Our approach places African art in conversation with the broader history of modern and contemporary sculpture, inviting collectors to engage with these works first as art—while remaining attentive to the cultures, histories, and traditions from which they emerged.
Our gallery is based in New York City, where visitors are welcome to view the collection by appointment at 157 East 37th Street. Before establishing our New York space, we maintained a gallery in Paris at 8 rue de Bièvre, just meters away from Notre Dame Cathedral.
Today, our website extends that physical gallery into a broader space for discovery and conversation. We believe that the best way to understand an object is to spend time with it—to look closely, consider its form and surface, and discover the history it carries.
