Holo Figure

This Holo figure is distinguished by an unusually inventive treatment of gesture. Rather than relying on the frontal, self-contained stance common to much Central African figuration, the sculptor opens the body outward by extending both arms horizontally, resulting in a striking and unexpected sense of movement. The artist also plays deliberately with proportion. The elongated arms with enlarged hands contrast with the slender legs and relatively compact torso, while the rounded modeling of the shoulders, abdomen, and thighs gives the figure a palpable physicality. The hands, carefully articulated at the fingertips, become expressive elements in their own right, transforming the gesture into the sculpture’s principal visual event. Moreover, the small head is another interesting decision made by the artist because it creates a deliberate tension with the long, expansive arms and the fuller torso. Its diminutive scale has an important compositional effect: it lengthens the figure, making the body seem taller and more attenuated. At the same time, the small head prevents the sculpture from becoming overly naturalistic; the small head is not a weakness or an anatomical distortion; it is central to the sculptor’s invention.
